Saint Kitts and Nevis has a population of 38763 (2003). Blacks account for 94%, and there are whites and mixed races. English is the official and lingua franca. Most residents believe in Christianity. Official Language is English.
The sugar industry is the main pillar of the national economy. Agriculture is dominated by sugarcane, and other products include coconuts, fruits and vegetables. Most of the food is imported. In recent years, tourism, export processing and banking have also begun to develop, and tourism income has gradually become the country's main source of foreign exchange.
