It became part of the British colony of the Leeward Islands in 1872 and was under the jurisdiction of the Governor of the Leeward Islands until 1960. Thereafter the island was managed by the appointed chief minister. In September 1986, the Virgin Islands Party came to power and won consecutive general elections in November 1990, February 1995, and May 1999.
