Dominica was originally a place where Indians lived. It became a Spanish colony in 1492. The Spanish established the city of Santo Domingo on the island in 1496, becoming the first permanent settlement of European colonists in the Americas. Belonged to France in 1795. Returned to Spain in 1809. It became independent from Spain in November 1821 and was invaded by Haiti in February of the following year. Independence was declared again on February 27, 1844, and the Dominican Republic was established. It was again occupied by Spain from 1861 to 1865. From 1916 to 1924, the United States imposed military rule on it. Since 1930, the Trujillo family backed by the United States has ruled for 30 years.

The national flag: It is rectangular with a ratio of length to width of 3:2. The white wide striped cross divides the flag surface into four equal horizontal rectangles. The upper left and lower right are blue, and the upper right and lower left are red. The national emblem is painted on the white cross. Red symbolizes the arduous struggle of fire and blood by the founders of the country for freedom and independence. It also symbolizes the blood of the strugglers; blue symbolizes freedom; the white cross represents religious beliefs and also symbolizes the struggle and sacrifice of the people.

Although there are more employees in the service industry than in agriculture, agriculture is still the main economic entity of the Dominican Republic and the second largest source of export income (after mining). Dominica’s annual tourism revenue is approximately US$100 million.
