Mali Introduction
Mali covers an area of more than 1.24 million square kilometers and is located in a landlocked country on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert in western Africa. It is bordered by Mauritania and Senegal to the west, Algeria and Niger to the north and east, and Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso to the south. Most of the territory is terraces with an elevation of about 300 meters, which are relatively gentle. There are some sandstone low mountains and plateaus in the easternmost, central and western parts, and the highest peak, Hongboli Mountain, is 1,155 meters above sea level. The northern part has a tropical desert climate, and the central and southern parts have a tropical grassland climate. Historically, it was the center of the Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire and the Songhai Empire. It became a French colony in 1895 and was called "French Sudan". Incorporated into "French West Africa" in 1904. In 1956 it became a "semi-autonomous republic" of the "French Federation". In 1958, it became an "autonomous republic" within the "French Community" and was named the Republic of Sudan. In April 1959, it formed the Federation of Mali with Senegal, which was disintegrated in August 1960. Independence was declared on September 22 of the same year and the country was renamed the Republic of Mali. The Third Republic was established in January 1992. The national flag: It is rectangular with a ratio of length to width of 3:2. The flag surface is composed of three parallel and equal vertical rectangles, which are green, yellow, and red in order from left to right. Green is the color advocated by Muslims. Nearly 70% of Malians believe in Islam. Green also symbolizes the fertile oasis of Mali; yellow symbolizes the country's mineral resources; red symbolizes the blood of martyrs who fought and sacrificed for the independence of the motherland. The three colors of green, yellow and red are also pan-African colors and are a symbol of the unity of African countries. The population is 13.9 million (2006), and the official language is French. 68% of residents believe in Islam, 30.5% believe in fetishism, and 1.5% believe in Catholicism and Protestantism. |
