Mauritania covers an area of 1.03 million square kilometers. It is located in the western part of the Sahara Desert in Africa, borders Western Sahara, Algeria, Mali and Senegal, borders the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and has a coastline of 667 kilometers. More than 3/5 are deserts and semi-deserts, most of them are low plateaus with an altitude of about 300 meters, and the southeast border and coastal areas are plains. The highest peak is the mountain to the east of Frederick, with an elevation of only 915 meters. The lower reaches of Senegal River are the Mao and Se boundary rivers. Mauritania, the full name of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is located in the western part of the Sahara Desert in Africa. It borders Algeria and Western Sahara to the north, Mali to the east and southeast, and Senegal to the south. It faces the Atlantic Ocean to the west and has a coastline of 754 kilometers. More than 3/5 areas are desert and semi-desert. Most areas are low plateaus about 300 meters above sea level. The southeast border and coastal areas are plains. The highest peak is the mountain east of Frederick, only 915 meters above sea level. The lower reaches of Senegal River are the border rivers of Mao and Se. It has a tropical continental climate.
Before the 11th century BC, Mauritania was the main passage for ancient caravans from southern Morocco to the Niger River. Surrendered to the Roman Empire in the 2nd century BC. When the Arabs entered in the 7th century AD, the Moors accepted Islam and Arabic language and literature, gradually Arabized, and established a feudal dynasty. Since the 15th century, Portuguese, Dutch, British and French colonists have invaded one after another. It became a French colony in 1912. It was classified as "French West Africa" in 1920, became a semi-autonomous republic in 1957, and became an autonomous republic in the "French Community" in 1958, and was named the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. Independence was declared on November 28, 1960.

The population is 3 million (results from the 2005 census), Arabic is the official language, and French is the common language. The national languages are Hassan, Brar, Songe and Ulov. About 96% of residents believe in Islam (state religion).
