Mauritania Introduction

Mauritania covers an area of 1.03 million square kilometers. It is located in the western part of the Sahara Desert in Africa, borders Western Sahara, Algeria, Mali and Senegal, borders the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and has a coastline of 667 kilometers. More than 3/5 are deserts and semi-deserts, most of them are low plateaus with an altitude of about 300 meters, and the southeast border and coastal areas are plains. The highest peak is the mountain to the east of Frederick, with an elevation of only 915 meters. The lower reaches of Senegal River are the Mao and Se boundary rivers. Before the 11th century BC, Mauritania was the main passage for ancient caravans from southern Morocco to the Niger River. Surrendered to the Roman Empire in the 2nd century BC. Since the 15th century, Portuguese, Dutch, British and French colonists have invaded one after another. It became a French colony in 1912.
