Malawi Introduction
Malawi is a landlocked country in southeastern Africa with an area of more than 118,000 square kilometers. It borders Zambia to the west, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozambique to the east and south. Lake Malawi is the third largest lake in Africa. The Great Rift Valley of East Africa runs through the entire territory. There are many plateaus in the territory. The northern plateau is 1400-2400 meters above sea level; the southern Mulanje Mountain rises from the ground, and the Sapituwa Peak is 3000 meters high, which is the highest point in the country; the west of Mulanje Mountain is the Shire River Valley, forming a belt plain. In 1904, it was under the direct jurisdiction of the British government. The Governor was established in 1907. Renamed Nyasaran. In October 1953, Britain forcibly formed the "Central African Federation" with Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). It declared independence on July 6, 1964 and changed its name to Malawi. On July 6, 1966, the Republic of Malawi was established. National flag: It is rectangular with a ratio of length to width of 3:2. From top to bottom, it is composed of three parallel horizontal rectangles of black, red, and green. Above and in the middle of the flag is a rising sun, emitting 31 rays of light. Black symbolizes black people, and red symbolizes martyrs fighting for freedom and independence. Blood and green represent the beautiful land and green scenery of the country, and the sun symbolizes the hope of African people for freedom. The population is about 12.9 million (2005). The official languages are English and Chichiwa. Most people believe in primitive religions, and 20% believe in Catholicism and Protestantism. |
